			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p style="text-align: justify;">One of my favourite parts of a vocal or instrumental music class usually happens in the first five minutes. This is the time that can often make or break the rest of the lesson. Teaching time allotted for music is often at a premium, so whether the students are coming into your room on rotary or just changing over from another subject in the classroom, getting their attention quickly is important.  Short music activities that energize and focus attention while working on the elements of music can make the first five minutes both fun and educational. Some activities may have the students looking at you strangely at first (Teacher&#8217;s gone over the edge!), but once they get the idea and join in, even the reluctant students come prepared each day to start with either a game or an active response to music.  These opening activities can be selected according to the focus of the day&#8217;s lesson, as a review or just as a general development of music concepts. Of course there are those days when the main lesson is just going horribly wrong, the students are hanging from the lights (Day after Halloween perhaps?) and nothing is being accomplished other than the beginnings of a raging headache! On those days I would chuck the lesson plan and fall back on one of the energizing music activities so that the students could be very active and still get some value out of the exercise!  A few Ideas to Get Started  Echo Orchestra &#8211; Students stay seated and the teacher quickly splits the class into 4 or 5 groups as might be done for singing in a round. Starting with the first group, the teacher vocalizes a short melodic, rhythmic or sound effect pattern that the group begins to echo and repeat. Once that group is going, the teacher starts the next group with a different pattern and continues until all groups have started &#8220;playing in the orchestra. The teacher then conducts the group indicating crescendos, decrescendos and changes in tempo for the entire &#8220;orchestra&#8221;. Individual groups should be quietened, raised or cut off and restarted so that they get an opportunity to listen to the others and hear the changing sound with different crescendos and decrescendos. This is also a great activity for working on crisp cut-offs!  The teacher should try to have the different patterns cover the ranges in pitch (high, medium, low) and perhaps have a percussion section. For a wacky day make the strangest melodic and rhythmic sound effects that you can for each group.  Once the students are familiar with the conducting patterns have them take turns being the conductor.  Moveable Beat &#8211; This one is fun for a very basic beat activity with younger children. As a selection of music is being played have the students &#8220;keep the Beat&#8221; in different parts of their bodies. The teacher calls out the part and students move the beat accordingly. E.g. &#8220;Keep the beat in your feet.&#8221; (hands, knees, shoulders, head, toes, nose, everywhere)  Interpretive Movement &#8211; Have a variety of styles of music ready to play (recorded or live). Ask students to &#8220;move to the music&#8221; showing the beat, tempo, melodic movement and perhaps a repetitive rhythm. Depending on the age and experience of the children, you may want to introduce one element at a time. I don&#8217;t use the word dance for this activity since some children freeze up if they think they have to dance.  Sol-fa Calisthenics &#8211; This works well with younger children for practising the concept of pitch. Assign the parts of the body to the notes of the scale. Start with do, (toes), mi (knees), sol (waist), la, (shoulders), do1 (head) and when the students are ready, add re (mid shin), fa (hips) and ti (ears).  To teach the positions, the teacher sings the notes and shows the positions as the students follow along. Once the students are familiar with the location of each pitch, the teacher could sing the notes and the students do the movements, touching the correct part for each note. For some groups it may be easier for the students if the teacher sings the pattern first and then the students sing and do the movements. For a better workout, put in several larger intervals. For example: do-sol-do1-do-sol. Give the students a break when they are tired. Have a leader perform the movements while the students sing the correct pitches. The concept of tempo could also be introduced. Before starting, tap and count out eight beats to establish the tempo of the exercise.  Major/Minor Freeze Dance &#8211; When working on the major and minor scales, this activity gives students a fun way to learn to recognize the sound of each. This works best if the teacher (or student) can play short rhythmic passages on a piano or some other instrument. As the music is playing the students may dance (move) as long as it is in a major key. As soon as the music changes to a minor key the students must freeze until they hear a major key again. Sometimes switch it around and allow movement with the minor key and freeze with the major key.  These are just a few ideas for energizing the first five minutes of a music lesson. <p style="text-align: justify;">In some of my previous English as a foreign Language Teaching articles we&#8217;ve opened discussion over the varied uses of music in the English as a Foreign Language and other foreign language learning classrooms. Activities for using music to &#8220;time&#8221; exercises and class activities (restrictive pacing), music to help in controlling the mood of the learners (the Affective Filter hypothesis) and the effect of music on the brain itself are topics that have been previously broached.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">You Call THAT Music?</p>
<p><span id="more-102"></span></p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">What music exactly though? While some suggestions as to types of music have been offered, up to this point we haven&#8217;t specifically named pieces of music actually proven to be effective in EFL class room use. I did provide some songs with links to a few vocal hits from the 70s in the article, &#8220;You Call THAT Music?&#8221; I&#8217;ve likewise named composers predominantly in use in EFL and ESL class rooms. Among those cited were the following classical music composers. This time however, I&#8217;m adding specific pieces of music that you can use.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">o Beethoven &#8211; Sonata for Piano No. 8 in C Opus 13 &#8220;Pathetique&#8221; (Adagio Cantabile), and Sonata for Piano No. 24 in F Sharp Minor (A Therese) Opus 78</p>

If learners like a particular piece and so comment on it, I have them investigate further for an added dimension to their learning. 			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p style="text-align: justify;">I have had the opportunity to lead several music assisted relaxation groups in public school special education classrooms. These groups have included a range of ages and types of disabilities including Down Syndrome, autism, mental retardation and Cerebral Palsy. One of the key points I like to emphasize with my clients and their instructors is that learning to relax can become a conditioned response. This means that relaxing can be practiced so that it is more effective and useful in the future.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Generally the clients that I work with in the special education classrooms do not have typical life stressors that would induce anxiety and require relaxation, but there are other reasons that relaxation can be an important tool for them and their teachers. I have found that many of the special education students are easily overwhelmed with environmental stimuli in their daily environment. Most teachers recognize this situation and have created quiet areas of their room that have been somewhat sectioned off and made comfortable for students to experience some quiet time without so much of the distractions of the classroom.</p>
<p><span id="more-99"></span></p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">In other situations, students sometimes become agitated or emotionally upset without apparent cause. When this happens, it has been helpful to have a familiar music relaxation or music listening strategy already in place as part of the behavior intervention plan. In addition, the students may also benefit from social interaction, gross motor movement, stretching and opportunities to become peer models or leaders as they participate in small group relaxation activities.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">I have used various music assisted relaxation activities with school-age students. There is not a specific protocol that must be followed, but rather some general suggestions and ideas to reference as you implement relaxation activities into your classroom:</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">1. Music choice &#8211; Music for relaxation should be chosen according to several criteria. The most important quality of the music is a slow tempo with a predictable underlying rhythmic pulse. I recommend a tempo of about 60 &#8211; 80 beats per minute. Music without lyrics is recommended, but there may be some singing if it does not distract too much attention from the experience. The melody should be pleasant and part of traditional music and not atonal or experimental. Try to use songs that do not have sudden changes in tempo, dynamics or unexpected starts or stops. The melody should also stay in the mid-range and not sound extremely low or high. There are some very good songs by Enya, Keving Kern, and Daniel Kobialka that I have used in my groups.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">2. Facilitator &#8211; The person doing the relaxation facilitating, either a teacher or student, should use a calm, steady voice. Practice speaking slowly and clearly, pausing often to listen to the music. The music should be loud enough to mask unwanted environmental sounds, but not so loud that the facilitator has to speak any louder than he or she would in a normal conversation. The facilitator should sit in a chair and demonstrate the breathing or stretching movements.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">3. Breathing &#8211; Breathing is the foundation for these relaxation groups. Start out the group with several deep cleansing breaths by breathing in through the nose and out through the mouth. Continue the relaxation by practicing some deep breathing in and out using slow eight or ten count intervals. Breathing can be verbally reinforced by describing the &#8220;revitalizing,&#8221; &#8220;fresh,&#8221; &#8220;relaxing,&#8221; air going in and the &#8220;discomfort,&#8221; &#8220;anxiety,&#8221; and &#8220;stress,&#8221; leaving the body. After a few minutes of breathing, the facilitator should encourage the group to get more comfortable in their chairs, close their eyes if desired, and breathe normally. Breathing should fall into a steady, relaxed rhythm.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">4. Stretching &#8211; I encourage breathing and &#8220;stretching&#8221; as the main components of the relaxation sessions for these groups with students who have disabilities. Simple gross motor movements demonstrated by the facilitator provide &#8220;concrete&#8221; actions for the group to follow. I usually do shoulder rolls forward and backward, reaching for the ceiling and the floor and slowly tilting the head from side to side and forward as the basic movements. Other stretches can be done by reaching forward or sweeping the arms up and down as if doing very slow jumping jacks. Combine some breathing in and out on selected motions for added effect.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">5. Imagery &#8211; For groups that do not have people with disabilities it is very effective to use some kind of imagery to facilitate the relaxation. Suggestions include imagining a warm light that slowly warms and relaxes each part of the body or being guided to a restful place in nature where comforting sounds and worry free relaxation can take place. Most of my clients in special education do not respond well to abstract imaginations and descriptions, but music that has environmental sounds or large pictures with client preferred settings may be possible applications after a relaxation routine is familiar and established.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">The relaxation experience should begin and end with similar breathing and gross motor movements. Between these times the facilitator is free to try different stretches or breathing as they wish. This allows for leadership and choice-making opportunities for the students. Picture cards that illustrate the gross motor movements can be made so that students can make a choice between pictures and then present their choice to the group. The facilitator may also pass out supportive instruments such as an ocean drum to add to the atmosphere of the experience. An 6&#8242;-10&#8242; parachute shared by the group is a wonderful way to practice slow breathing and movements!</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">The relaxation session should last about 5-10 minutes depending on the attention span of the participants. If this group relaxation is practiced on a regular basis, you will notice that the students will tone down their activity simply in anticipation of the experience and even more when the music begins playing. Teachers will find that just by playing the music that they regularly use for relaxation they may be able to aid a student who is upset or agitated and help them regain some self-control. The relaxation protocol may also be helpful to use on days when an unplanned change of the school schedule has disrupted the regular routine and the students are unusually off-task.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">There are many applications for the use of music assisted relaxation activity in relation to objectives in a student&#8217;s Individual Education Plan. Following directions, making choices, gross motor movement, counting skills, focus of attention, gesturing and verbalizing are all specific objectives that can be tracked for progress during music facilitated group relaxation.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Now&#8230;take a deep breath&#8230;.exhale&#8230;</p>

Now, in response to reader comments, I&#8217;d like to expound on what areas music helps, and how it could be used with elementary school age children who are English Language Learners. When it comes to using music in TESOL, English as a foreign or second language teaching and learning, there are several viable options that can be applied depending on the purpose of the lesson, the facilities you may have available, your learners&#8217; ages and profiles. Let&#8217;s briefly look at the rationale behind using music as a motivational tool in addition to some useful possibilities.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Background Music</p>
<p><span id="more-94"></span></p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Have you noticed that music is often used to control or affect our moods while we are in a variety of public and commercial locations? Pay attention next time you&#8217;re at the mall, in a medical or dental practitioner&#8217;s office or clinic, in a restaurant or eatery, walking through strip malls or shopping districts, in an executive waiting area, in many commercial office settings, in elevators (the origin of elevator music) even &#8220;on hold&#8221; with a utility service, 800 number or the like. Likely you&#8217;ll find yourself almost inadvertently listening to music. This is definitely no accident. Why? Because a multitude of studies has shown that the public can generally be &#8220;controlled&#8221; or at least influenced to some extent by listening to certain types of music under certain types of circumstances. The company, Muzak, made millions based on this concept.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">How Does Music Make You Feel?</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Think for a few moments, about how different types music make you feel. When you hear classical, for example, how do you feel? Excited, anxious or relaxed and calmed? How about Rock music? Do you have the urge to relax then? Probably not. When you listen to smooth Jazz, do you &#8220;mellow out&#8221;? You do, huh? Guess why that&#8217;s what&#8217;s playing in medical and dental facility waiting areas. Instrumentals frequently have a soothing effect on most listeners too. If you&#8217;re in a &#8220;fast food&#8221; type of eatery that relies on volume sales for profits, you can almost bet that if they play music it will be quick-tempo (&#8221;Hurry-up&#8221;) beat to subtly aid you in finishing your food in short order. On the other side of the ledger, a strong, throbbing rhythmic beat that drives you to motion and action is the forte of nightclubs and discos worldwide. The louder the music beats (to help in overwhelming competing thoughts and feeling), the more bass and entrancing, the better.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">In the Language Learning Classroom</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">What is it we&#8217;d like to convey using music in the English language learning classroom?<br />
According to research, one critical purpose of music is to aid in lowering the Affective Filter of language learners. (Krashen-Terrell, 1983) By lowering the learners&#8217; Affective Filter we can actually:</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">o Encourage input, that is, improve the ease with which new language elements and information are learned or acquired</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">o Improve motivation and positive self-image</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Given two learners with the exact same input or lesson, for instance, the one with the lower affective filter will acquire or learn more according to the Affective Filter Hypothesis mentioned previously. This strongly implies that by exercising some control over the learners&#8217; classroom environment, we can in effect, help them to learn more and learn better. This can be especially true with young learners. The how and why of this fact are truly fascinating.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">In my next article post, we&#8217;ll continue with ways music can be employed in the English language learning classroom, useful activities in EFL or with English language learners. What kinds and genres of music might prove to be helpful and some free (I&#8217;ll bet your budget&#8217;s tight) sources for music to use in your class room with your language learners, regardless of the ages or profiles.</p>
